Case 13

Selected work/Integrated asset model

Finding the limit behind the lost barrels

Integrated well, network and facilities modelling on a mature offshore asset, where the binding limit sat with a different team from the one reporting the loss.

IThe problem

Production on a mature offshore platform depended on how well performance, gathering system backpressure and process limits interacted. Each discipline reviewed its own part and each found something plausible. The limit belonged to the whole system and nobody owned the whole system.

IIWhat we did

An integrated asset model joined well performance, network hydraulics and facilities capacity in one calibrated view. The model had to reproduce the measured system before it was used to propose changes. Operating changes and well opportunities were tested for the next limit they would expose and ranked against a defined baseline, with an observation period long enough to tell a short-lived rate increase from a sustained gain.

IIIWhat it changed

Operating changes and interventions were ranked on the whole-system response and checked against the baseline afterwards. The team that owned the fix was often not the one that had reported the loss.

IVConclusion

Conclusion

The objective was to rank opportunities on the whole-system response rather than on one discipline's view. It was achieved. The model was calibrated to test and operating data before use, each opportunity on the register names the next limit it would expose, and verification against the baseline is part of the register.
